The Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU), in collaboration with the Government of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, will be re-launching its initiative in 2018.
The objective of the first Roadshow initiative, which began in 2009, was to raise awareness and educate on the power of ICT and the role of innovation in leveraging its potential. That initiative took the CTU to 18 Caribbean countries with repeat visits to four. In this new initiative, the Roadshows will continue to raise awareness and educate on the power of ICT but will focus on accelerating the effective adoption of ICT in government and laying a foundation of understanding for the establishment of 21 st Century Governments.
Caribbean E-agriculture Forum
Agriculture is key to achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Agriculture seems intertwined with all the SDGs. Sustainable ICTs is key to accelerate achieving SDGs. All three pillars of sustainable development – economic development, social inclusion and environmental protection – need ICTs as key catalysts, and ICTs will be absolutely crucial for achieving the SDGs. Bringing the two together, the use of ICTs in Agriculture (E-Agriculture) has become increasingly paramount to the future development of the Agricultural sector.
E-agriculture is also one of the action lines identified in the declaration and plan of action of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS). Therefore the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), together with support from partners including the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA), have developed the E-agriculture Strategy Guide. The guide provides a framework for countries to develop their national e-agriculture strategy, or master plan.
Setting in place a national e-agriculture strategy is an essential first step for any country planning on using ICTs for agriculture.
To support the use of proven e-agriculture solutions and services and in sensitizing the region on e-Agriculture, ITU, in collaboration with FAO, CTU and other partners, is conducting a three (3) day e-agriculture Forum (9 th -11thJuly, 2018). The forum will be followed by a one day Hackathon (12 th July 2018) on developing e-agriculture solutions.
